WOMAD CHEER WRAPS UP WEEK

From Taranaki Daily News

...this weekend was all about Womad, and what a weekend it was.

The weather was magnificent once again, and fortunately, thanks to a media pass, I got to attend my first media conference as a journalist, and it was with one of my favourite bands, Alabama 3.

I figured I wouldn't ask anything – not like me I know to keep my mouth shut – but Harpo, Larry and Aurora were so relaxed, the questions were soon flying. The strange thing about Alabama 3 is that their style of music, as described on the CD cover, is not exactly what I imagined I would ever listen to. They describe themselves as a fusion of gospel, country, blues, techno, acid-house rock. For most of us, they made their name for having the signature tune to television's The Sopranos but one listen to the rest of their early CD Exile on Coldharbour Lane was enough to make me a fan for good.

They performed both their sets to packed, standing room-only audiences and despite being promoted as acoustic and unplugged, the sound was amazing.

Womad wasn't just Alabama 3 of course; there was the usual mixture of international artists, with a decent smattering of local as well.
