WHEN LARRY MET BUFFY PART 1

Do you know who Buffy Sainte-Marie is?
I don't.  But I'm going to find out, because she's playing the Meltdown festival at the Southbank in London, and I'm going, apparently.  She mentioned in an interview that she liked the Alabama 3 so Larry's immediately all over it. He gets our people to ring up her people and sort out guestlist places. Then our people (currently a publican from Watford called Ian) calls and tells me I should be there to document this historic moment. There'll be free beer and he'll cover my expenses. I was planning on an evening of furious masturbation punctuated by long periods of staring forlornly into space, but decide to do what's best for the band, and accept the mission.

I've heard the name, but like 'Kim Kardashan' or  'Nick Clegg', or 'Naum Gabo' or I don't know what a Buffy-Sainte-Marie is. I think it's some kind of singer/ songwriter. Isn't she that blonde who wrote songs satirising people who espouse indie values while wallowing in middle class lifestyles while wallowing in a middleclass lifestyle and embodying indie values? No. That’s Saint Etienne. Or was that Alex James? No, she's that sad-faced teenage babysitter that does Kung Fu on the undead, Carol-Anne-Duffy the Vampire Slayer.

I do a google and discover that in fact Buffy Saint-Marie is:
'a Canadian Cree singer-songwriter, musician, composer, visual artist, educator, pacifist, and social activist. Throughout her career in all of these areas, her work has focused on issues of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Her singing and writing repertoire includes subjects of love, war, religion, and mysticism. She recorded one country album, I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again, in Nashville, and her Academy Award-winning "Up Where We Belong" is considered "pure pop".
She founded the Cradleboard Teaching Project, an educational curriculum devoted to better understanding Native Americans. She has won recognition and many awards and honours for both her music and her work in education and social activism.'

Fair play. And she shagged Bob Dylan, allegedly. Christ, Larry's going to be on her like flies on shit. I do a YouTube and get a pretty lady with caramel skin and the straightest, blackest hair singing a song called 'Universal Soldier'. It's the quintessential 60's protest song, delivered on a Playschool acoustic in the obligatory Joan Baez warble.

She's a hippy. My punk training kicks in and a wave of cynicism rises in me...but in the interests of journalistic integrity, I will repress it, and keep my mind as open as the petals of a lotus flower.
